David Stookey

OG House Manager

I never imagined my life would lead me here. Growing up in Syracuse, New York, I had no idea that my journey would take me through the depths of struggle and into a life of purpose. After studying at Columbia College Chicago, I found myself at a crossroads. Like so many others, I thought my life was over when I came to Breathe. Little did I know, it was just beginning.

Now, as a House Manager, I get to witness something incredible every day—people turning their lowest moments into opportunities for growth and healing. Watching someone break free from addiction and create a life they never thought possible is something that never gets old. One of the most rewarding parts of my work is staying connected with alumni, seeing them thrive long after treatment, and knowing that I am part of a community that truly supports one another. It’s a kind of connection you don’t find anywhere else.

When life gets overwhelming, I find my own ways to stay balanced. Nature has always been my safe place—a space to unplug and reset. I also lean on my support system, spend time with loved ones, and work with my sponsee on his step work, which always helps me get out of my own head. I remind myself daily: Bless them. Change me. It’s a simple mantra that keeps me focused on what I can control—my own growth and healing.

If you’re thinking about coming to Breathe, I want you to know this: it’s okay to be scared. Change is terrifying. But nothing is more worth it. This isn’t the end—it’s the beginning of something better than you ever imagined.

Outside of work, I love exploring new places, seeing live theater, and enjoying good food with friends. And if I had to listen to one song on repeat for 24 hours? Orpheus by Sara Bareilles—because finding your way back to yourself is the most powerful thing you can do.
