What is it

What Is Somatic Therapy?

Somatic therapy is one of the therapeutic approaches available at Breathe. Like every therapy we offer, it's introduced and adjusted by your clinical team as part of a plan built around you, not applied as a one-size-fits-all track.

Somatic therapy works with the body, not just the mind. Trauma and chronic stress often get held physically, in tension, breath, posture, and nervous system patterns that persist even after the original event has passed. This approach helps the body process and release what talk alone sometimes can't reach, working alongside more traditional talk-based therapies rather than replacing them.

What actually happens in a somatic therapy session?+

You and your therapist work with how trauma and stress show up physically, tension, breath, posture, rather than only talking through what happened. The goal is helping your body feel safe again, not just your mind.

Do I have to talk about my trauma in detail for somatic therapy to work?+

Somatic therapy often works with what your body is holding without requiring you to narrate every detail of what happened.

Is somatic therapy used alone, or with other therapies?+

At Breathe, it's part of a broader individualized plan, often alongside other approaches, not a stand-alone track.

Is somatic therapy only for trauma?+

It's especially useful for trauma, but it also supports general emotional regulation and stress management as part of a broader treatment plan.

What if I'm not comfortable with physical touch or movement?+

Somatic therapy doesn't require touch. It can involve breath work, grounding techniques, and body awareness practices that stay entirely within your comfort.

Is somatic therapy covered by insurance?+

In most cases, yes, as part of your overall treatment plan. Our admissions team verifies your specific benefits before you commit to anything.
