Where family work fits in treatment
While your loved one is in residential treatment, the care team keeps you honestly informed. The family program begins when they step down to PHP or IOP, and runs alongside their own care from there.
Why choose Breathe for family care
No assumptions about who counts
Partners, chosen family, and community are welcomed as fully as blood relatives, because for many of our clients, they're who actually shows up.
Staff who've lived it
Family sessions are led by people who understand estrangement, religious trauma, and rebuilding trust, not just from training, but often from experience.
Woven into treatment, not bolted on
Family work happens alongside the client's individual treatment, not as an afterthought scheduled separately from the real recovery process.

Frequently asked questions
Straight answers to what families ask us before they decide anything.
Who can join the family program?+
The family program is for clients in our PHP or IOP programs, with their therapist's approval. Any family can potentially take part, including partners and chosen family. It depends on the client's and the family's willingness, and for the 3-Day Family Workshop, on everyone being able to attend in person. During residential treatment, the care team keeps families informed.
Does “family” have to mean blood relatives?+
No. Partners, chosen family, close friends, and community members are all welcome to participate, we don't require a biological or legal relationship. Related reading: Chosen Family and Recovery: Why Your Support System Doesn't Have to Be Blood.
What if my loved one's biological family isn't involved, or isn't safe to involve?+
That's common, and it doesn't limit access to family programming. Many clients build their family system here around chosen family instead.
Can family participate remotely if they're not local to Los Angeles?+
For family therapy sessions, yes, those can be done online. The 3-Day Family Workshop is different: it is in person only.
Is family participation required?+
No. Family work is shaped by the client's and the family's willingness to take part, and we encourage it where it's safe and appropriate. If family can't join, or the timing isn't right, your loved one's treatment moves forward either way.
Does insurance cover family programming?+
In most cases family therapy sessions are covered as part of the overall treatment plan. Our team verifies your specific benefits before you commit to anything.
What does the family program work on?+
It helps loved ones understand addiction, see the relational patterns that can keep everyone stuck, communicate more honestly, set healthy boundaries, and build their own tools for supporting recovery. Parents, partners, siblings, close friends and other supportive people can all be part of it. The goal is a process that's collaborative and supportive for the whole family system.
My loved one isn't ready for treatment yet. What can I do?+
First, your concern matters, and you don't have to handle this alone. Watching someone you love struggle when they aren't ready for help is painful. Start by taking care of your own well-being: get support of your own, such as a therapist or an Al-Anon group. Learning how addiction works also helps you support your loved one without enabling. You can call us any time to talk it through, even before they're ready.
