Verify my insuranceStructured like a day, not a stay
PHP, Partial Hospitalization, sometimes called day treatment, is intensive day treatment; you return home or to transitional living in the evenings instead of staying on-site overnight. It carries much of the structure of residential care during the day, without the full-time stay.
Full days of structured programming
Group therapy, individual sessions, and clinical care fill the day, five days a week.
Continued psychiatric and clinical care
The same level of clinical attention as residential care, without living on-site.
A planned step-down from residential
PHP is usually the next level down after residential, a bridge, not a drop-off.
Housing support if you need it
If you don't have somewhere stable to sleep at night, we help connect you with sober living.
PHP runs Monday through Friday, about six hours a day. Your own schedule is confirmed at intake.

Questions people ask about PHP
Straight answers about what a day in PHP looks like and who it's for.
What makes PHP different from outpatient or residential care?+
PHP is more intensive and structured than traditional outpatient care, without requiring 24-hour inpatient stay. It sits between residential treatment and lighter outpatient support.
What happens during a typical day in PHP?+
Clients take part in daily evidence-based group and individual therapy, holistic wellness activities, and skill-building focused on emotional regulation, trauma healing, and relapse prevention. Compared with residential, PHP puts more weight on practical life skills and time management, so the changes you're making start to fit into everyday life.
Do I stay overnight during PHP?+
No. PHP provides intensive daytime treatment while you return home or to another living situation in the evenings.
Will I still be connected to my home and community during PHP?+
Yes. Maintaining that connection while receiving robust clinical support is part of how PHP is designed.
Can my family take part while I'm in PHP?+
Yes. Our family program is for clients in PHP or IOP, with your therapist's approval. It includes family therapy, which can happen in person or online, and an in-person 3-Day Family Workshop. Partners and chosen family are welcome, and participation depends on your willingness and theirs.
Who is welcome at Breathe?+
Clients of every background. Breathe offers LGBTQIA+ affirming care at every level of treatment, and partners and chosen family are welcome in our family program.
Is PHP covered by insurance?+
In most cases, yes. We are in-network with most major providers and verify your specific benefits before you commit to anything. We do not currently accept Medi-Cal or Medicare. If that's your coverage, call us, we'll tell you straight away and point you toward a resource that can help.
Who is PHP a good fit for?+
People who have begun to stabilize, physically and emotionally, and are now gathering the tools they'll take back into daily life. It suits anyone who needs more support than outpatient care offers but doesn't need round the clock residential supervision. Placement is based on a clinical assessment, not a fixed rule.
How many hours a day is PHP?+
PHP runs Monday through Friday, about six hours a day, at our outpatient clinic on Melrose Avenue. Your own schedule is confirmed at intake.
What if I'm coming to PHP from a hospital or another program?+
With your permission, we coordinate with the referring team first, reviewing your treatment history, medications, current needs and goals so your care continues without a gap. On your first day you get an orientation, join your first group, and are paired with a peer buddy.
